Pressure gauges in mbar range
Capsule Pressure Gauges for Low Pressures in the mbar Range
When reliable indication of the smallest positive and negative pressures is required, the capsule measuring principle is the first choice. STASTO offers capsule pressure gauges for measuring ranges in the mbar range – from vacuum to low positive pressure. Select the right version by measuring range, connection and application, and measure air and non-aggressive gases precisely where Bourdon tube gauges are too insensitive.

Your Benefits
Why Capsule Pressure Gauges from STASTO
The capsule sensing element is designed for low pressures and provides a clearly readable display in the mbar range where Bourdon tube gauges reach their limits.
Designed for Low Pressures
The capsule sensing element expands noticeably even at small pressures and delivers a clearly readable display in the mbar range – where Bourdon tube gauges are too insensitive.
Wide Range of Measurement Spans
Series 5801 to 5842 cover measuring ranges from vacuum (e.g. −160/0 mbar) through fine-measurement ranges (0–40 mbar) up to 0–400 mbar – so you can find the right range for your application.
Proven Accuracy
The listed capsule pressure gauges are manufactured to accuracy class 1.6 (stated per variant, see data sheet) – a practically appropriate level of accuracy for indication tasks in the mbar range.
Compact with Flexible Connection
Standard design with 63 mm dial diameter for confined installation situations, connection 1/4″ bottom or 1/4″ back (depending on type). Selected versions are 10× overload resistant – please check per variant.
Buying Guide
Choosing the right measuring principle
In the mbar range, a conventional Bourdon tube gauge produces barely meaningful pointer deflections. A capsule element gauge, by contrast, displays even small pressures clearly and accurately. Here's how to find the right instrument.
Measuring principles compared
- Bourdon tube
- For medium to high pressures in the bar range; insufficiently sensitive in the mbar range for meaningful readings.
- Capsule element
- The pressure-loaded capsule expands noticeably even at low pressures – ideal for clean gases and air in the mbar range.
- Diaphragm element
- Mechanically more robust for viscous, contaminated or aggressive media; also suitable for low pressures.
How to select in four steps
- 1. Define measuring range
- Vacuum (e.g. −160/0 mbar), fine range (0–40 mbar) or higher (up to 0–400 mbar)? The operating pressure should ideally fall within the middle third of the scale.
- 2. Determine connection position
- 1/4″ bottom (back-of-pipe) or 1/4″ rear (flush-front).
- 3. Check overload requirements
- If pressure spikes are expected, an overload-resistant version is recommended (e.g. Series 5840 ff., 10× overload-proof; depending on variant).
- 4. Match medium & environment
- Pay attention to the materials of the housing, measuring element and sight glass, as well as the permissible media/ambient temperature according to the data sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ on capsule gauges
Answers about measuring principle, measuring range, media, and selection of capsule gauges.
What is a capsule gauge?
A capsule gauge is a mechanical pressure measuring instrument whose sensing element consists of a pressure-sensitive capsule. It deflects even at very low pressures, enabling a readable display in the mbar range – where Bourdon tube gauges are too insensitive.
For which pressures is a capsule gauge suitable?
For low pressures in the mbar range. The STASTO range (Series 5801–5842) covers spans from vacuum to low positive pressure, for example −160/0 mbar as well as 0–40, 0–100 to 0–400 mbar. Please refer to the product variants for the specific ranges available.
Which media can I measure?
Typically air and non-aggressive, non-viscous gases. For aggressive or contaminated media, chemical diaphragm seal versions are more suitable. The material and temperature specifications in the respective datasheet are authoritative.
What does class 1.6 mean?
The accuracy class describes the permissible deviation relative to the full-scale value. The listed capsule gauges are manufactured to class 1.6 (per variant) – a practical level for display applications in the mbar range.
What is the difference between a capsule gauge and a Bourdon tube gauge?
The Bourdon tube gauge is designed for higher pressures in the bar range, while the capsule gauge is intended for low pressures in the mbar range. For higher accuracy in the bar range, STASTO also offers precision gauges (e.g. Series MA043-B).
What nominal size and connection are available?
The standard version has Ø 63 mm with 1/4″ bottom or 1/4″ back connection. Further versions and special ranges on request.
Is the gauge protected against overload?
Selected versions are protected against 10× overload. Please check the specification on the respective product variant or contact us.
